Does Gov. Paul LePage think that the mural, by referencing past labor quarrels, slanders modern business practices? The unfairness accusation appears to point in that direction. But business has repudiated its past abuses. Why does it need defending?
Things change. There has been no common outrage among businessmen about the mural. Business knows that once upon a time some of them behaved badly. All of that is history, and there’s nothing threatening about history except the unwillingness to learn from it.
The governor needs to move on. He is seeing a problem that isn’t there.
There are more important battles for fairness that need to be fought.
The governor can put up a few pictures of model businessmen if he likes, but he should bring back the mural. Then, we can move on.
