PERU— Selectmen on Monday night discussed changing the title of secretary to selectmen to administrative assistant.

Selectman Kathy Hussey has been serving as board secretary for several years and said she thinks the title did not cover all of her various jobs.

“I do Planning Board and Appeals Board work as well as work for the code enforcement officer and the animal control officer. It’s just a name change that would more reflect my duties,” she said.

Former Selectman Jim Pulsifer responded to the proposal saying, “To discuss this title change would be a clear conflict of interest. To have Kathy asking for making this change is not timely and there would be two members on the board who should not act on this.”

Pulsifer was referring to Hussey and her brother Selectman Rick Vaughn.

Selectman Tim Holland told Pulsifer the board would not be making a decision Monday night.

“I think the term selectman secretary is an outdated term, but I’m not sure what the title should be,” Chairman Laurieann Milligan said. “This position has evolved along with the work, and a title description is still to be determined.”

In other business, Town Clerk Vera Parent said even though the snow/sand budget is overdrawn, workers must be paid.

Road Commissioner Joe Roach said if workers were taking time off in lieu of pay, it didn’t reflect on his budget and made it difficult to figure next year’s budget accurately.

According to a revised Personnel Policy, compensatory time will be granted on a time-and-a-half basis after a 40-hour work week.

On Earth Day, April 22, a group of students will be cleaning Franklin Cemetery. Holland said he would set up the project.
