TURNER — A Turner Elementary School class will participate in a live, world-wide webcast Thursday with an award-winning science organization founded by the discoverer of the Titanic.

Turner’s Jennifer Bradford’s class will take part in a lesson with noted marine biologist Emma Hickerson of the JASON Project, which was founded by Robert Ballard. Ballard is best known for discovering the Titanic shipwreck in 1985.

Some of the Turner students’ video questions have been selected and will be part of the webcast. “It’s a big deal to be selected,” gifted and talented teacher Cindy Duguay said. The school doesn’t know which students’ questions have been chosen, but the involvement has lit a fire about the project and science among students, she said.

The live event will connect classrooms throughout the country and world with Hickerson, who works at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Texas and Louisiana. The webcast will originate at JASON’s studio on the northern Virginia campus of George Washington University.

Ballard started the JASON Project in 1989 in response to thousands of letters he received from students excited about his Titanic discovery. The goal of the project is to give students access to real-life scientists and further students’ interests in science, Duguay said.
