JAY — Students from Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls schools chose Spruce Mountain as the new name for their high and middle schools, the phoenix as their mascot, and black and green as their school colors.

The school systems will officially become Regional School Unit 73 on July 1. The three towns jointly own Spruce Mountain Ski Slope in Jay.

The current Jay Tigers and Livermore Falls Andies will put away their orange and black and their green and yellow, respectively.

Student leaders in grades five and up at five schools nominated a variety of names, sets of colors and mascots. The RSU 73 Transition Committee voted unanimously Tuesday night to recommend the students’ selections to the new RSU 73 school board, which will be elected April 19.

“The student councils did a great job,” Jay High School Principal Gilbert Eaton said Tuesday.

The Spruce Mountain nomination received 668 votes; 245 for the high school name, 219 for the middle school name and 224 for Spruce Mountain Academy.
