AUBURN — Curbside collections for spring cleanup will begin May 2, according to city officials.

There will be no charge for the collections, but Deputy Public Works Director Denis D’Auteuil said residents should register with the city by calling 333-6601, ext. 2152, or emailing their name, address type of solid waste to [email protected].

“One, it helps us to focus on the areas, for efficiency sake,” D’Auteuil said. “Plus, it gives a better communication tool. If they provide us with an email address, if there are changes next year, we can email it directly to them.”

The collections will be linked to the normal trash collection day. Residents who have trash collected on Mondays should their spring cleanup rubbish curbside by 7 a.m. on May 2. Residents who have their trash collected on Tuesdays should have their trash curbside by 7 a.m. May 4, and residents with Wednesday collections should have theirs curbside by 7 a.m. May 6.

Residents with Thursday trash pickup should have their spring cleanup trash out by 7 a.m. May 10 and those with Friday collections should be ready by 7 a.m. May 12.

“Basically, it takes us two weeks to accomplish all of this,” D’Auteuil said. “It’s a large undertaking.”

The city will take wood waste, brush and branches — butt ends must be left facing the street — furniture, rugs, mattresses, small appliances, metal waste, washers, dryers and small appliances. Hazardous materials won’t be collected curbside, but can be taken to the Environmental Depot at the Lewiston city landfill.

Residents can take their materials to Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. on Goldthwaite Road, if they choose. There’s no charge for that, but residents will have to provide proof of residency.

The city, faced with budget concerns, canceled the spring collections in 2010. They brought it back in May, charging residents a $20 fee to have their trash collected.

Lewiston’s Clean-up Assistance week runs from April 23 to 30. Residents are allowed to truck in bulky items, such as old furniture, carpeting or mattresses, construction and demolition debris, wood waste, brush tree clippings and scrap metal to the landfill, at 424 River Road. They can also bring old televisions and computer monitors and refrigerators.

The landfill will also take up to four tires and two 20-pound propane gas cylinders.

The city will waive fees for all residents with proof — driver’s licenses, tax payment receipts or utility bills are required. The city won’t waive fees for commercial accounts, including owners of apartment buildings.

Lewiston also plans a curbside brush collection beginning April 25. All brush being collected must be at the curb no later than Sunday, April 24, with the butt ends facing the street. The city will not collect stumps curbside.
