All season long, as the goals mounted, Lewiston forward Etienne Brodeur remained humble.

He reached 30. Then 40. Then 50, eventually scoring his 53rd goal of the season in Game 68 against Chicoutimi.

All the while, Brodeur continued to credit his teammates for good passes, his friends for helping him regain confidence over the summer, and the team’s coaching staff for developing a system in which he thrived.

Wednesday, though, the spotlight was all Brodeur’s. He was named to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s All-Star Second Team at the league’s annual Golden Puck Gala, honored among the rest of the league’s award winners.

“I think it’s a great honor, but like the rest of the season, none of it came alone,” Brodeur said.

The league’s annual hall of fame induction, which this year honored Robert Desjardins, Harold McKay, Martin Lapointe and Vincent Damphousse, was one of the evening’s highlights.

“It is truly outstanding to look back at the rich history of the QMJHL and honor those who have made it possible for the league to flourish and grow,” said Michel Cote, president of the QMJHL Hall of Fame Committee. “This evening, we inducted four important individuals who, in their own unique ways, contributed toward the expansion and notoriety of our league. These men are visionaries and athletes that have given their hearts and souls into the game of hockey.”

The QMJHL also handed out all of its important hardware, including the league”s MVP, Rookie of the Year and Personality of the Year awards.

“We’re happy to have assembled all these players and personalities from the world of hockey to highlight the great accomplishments from this past season,” QMJHL commissioner, Gilles Courteau said. “Our young players have a unique opportunity to experience moments that will remain with them for a very long time. It’s not every day that one has the chance to have under one roof such young hopefuls and great legends.”

Sean Couturier of Drummondville earned two of the more prestigious awards of the evening, taking home the Michel Briere Trophy as the league’s MVP, and the Michael Bossey Trophy as the QMJHL’s top professional prospect.

Philip-Michael Devos of Gatineau was the only other multiple award-winner Wednesday, earning the Jean Beliveau Trophy as the league’s top scorer, and the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league’s most sportsman-like player.

Charles Hudon of Chicoutimi won the RDS Cup as the rookie of the year, Simon Despres of Saint John was voted the league’s top defenseman, the Sea Dogs’ coach, Gerard Gallant and GM, Mike Kelly, were named best at their positions, and Saint John goalie Jacob DeSerres was honored as the goalie with the best goal against average.

Former Lewiston defenseman Nicolas Therrien earned the distinction as the QMJHL scholar/athlete of the year, and Shawinigan’s Gabriel Lemieux was judged to be the league’s humanitarian of the year.

Montreal Canadiens prospect and former Harvard skater Louis Leblanc took home the Paul Dumont Trophy as the league’s personality of the year.

Named as QMJHL first-team all-stars were goalie Christopher Gibson of Chicoutimi, defenders Despres and Ryan Kavanagh of Shawinigan and forwards Couturier, Jonathan Huberdeau of Saint John and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault of Quebec.

Joining Brodeur on the second team are goalie Evan Mosher of PEI, defensemen Brandon Gormley of Moncton and Jean-Philippe Mathieu of Drummondville and forwards Guillaume Asselin of Chicoutimi and Devos.

Brodeur and the Maineiacs will remain in Montreal this week and begin their second round playoff series against the Junior on Friday at the Verdun Auditorium.
