TURNER — William L. Hobbs, 88, of Turner passed away on Sunday, April 3, at his home.
He was born in Auburn, Nov. 26, 1922, the son of William Henry and Annie Dunham Hobbs. He graduated from Leavitt Institute, Class of 1941. He faithfully served and retired after 22 years from the U.S. Air Force, after serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He married Mabel I. Hodgman on Aug. 2, 1946, and she passed away on Oct. 3, 1971. He later married Phyllis E. Twitchell on June 25, 1972. He was a deputy sheriff for Androscoggin County, a seasonal employee at Leavitt Orchards in Turner, sexton of cemeteries for the town of Turner, where he also worked as a caretaker and he was the attendance officer for SAD 52.
He was a member of the Nezinscot Lodge 101 AF & AM in Turner, past grand master and secretary of Blake Lodge 110, I.O.O.F.; president of Maple Grove Cemetery Association and deacon and trustee at Turner Village Church.
He served as an umpire in the area high school softball programs and was a member of the Amateur Softball Association and the Maine Umpires Association. He also umpired Little League softball and baseball games for many years. He was a lifelong New England sports fan and lifelong animal lover.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Turner; a son, William Frank Hobbs of California; two daughters, Catherine Dunlap of Sabattus and Audrey Hobbs of Turner; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
