U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, and Reps. Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud said Friday in prepared statements or through their spokespersons they’ll go without pay during a government shutdown.
Actually, all will be paid, as mandated by a law passed by Congress.
Because of that, members of Congress saying they’ll go without pay will in fact have to write a check to the U.S. Treasury to return the money to taxpayers.
Spokespersons for Snowe, Collins and Pingree said they intend to write a check of the pay they’ll make during government shutdown to the U.S. Treasury, or donate the money to charity.
Michaud will donate the money to a charity. Which charity was not known Friday. “We’re still trying to figure that out,” said Michaud spokesman Ed Gilman.
The annual pay for members of the House and Senate is $174,000 a year, or divided by the days in a year, $476 a day.
Snowe and Collins are Republicans and Michaud and Pingree are Democrats.
