AUBURN — The search was on Friday afternoon for a man who police say robbed the Rite Aid store on Union Street.

At about 2:30 p.m., police said, a man in camouflage clothing, a ball cap and a mask walked into the store and handed a pharmacy clerk a note demanding medication.

The contents of the note were not revealed. Police said the pharmacist handed over the requested medication and the suspect fled the store.

Police who responded were initially led to a possible suspect in the area of Chestnut Street, across from the store. While officers checked out that lead, others swarmed on the area, checking the side streets around Rite Aid and interviewing potential witnesses.

Police called for a tracking dog from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. By 3 p.m., a pair of officers were being led by a dog outside the store. The dog led police across Hampshire Street, into Great Falls Plaza and to the area known as West Pitch.

No suspects were located. Later in the day, police were still investigating and searching for a suspect described as approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds.

Anyone with information is asked to call Auburn police Lt. Tim Cougle at 333-6651, ext. 2066.
