LIVERMORE FALLS — The summer recreation program is a go, Town Manager Kristal Flagg said.
“The only thing is there will be no busing for trips,” she told selectmen Monday.
The program, a joint venture with the town and Jay, is a six-week program held after school is out for the summer. Children from Jay, Livermore Falls, Livermore and Fayette pay a fee to attend. The latter two towns pay more because Livermore Falls and Jay raise the bulk of the money for the program.
Jay and RSU 36, which serves Livermore and Livermore Falls will combine to make RSU 73 as of July 1.
School staff will be busier this summer because of all the work that needs to be done this summer, Jay Superintendent Bob Wall said Thursday.
If voters in Livermore and Livermore Falls agree to close the Livermore Falls Middle School on Tuesday, May 10, then everything for fourth- and fifth-graders in Jay will be moved back to the Jay Elementary School. And, everything from the Livermore Falls Middle School will need to be moved to Jay Middle School. Most bus drivers are also custodians at the schools.
“We’re looking at a very busy summer. All of our staff is going to be engaged,” Wall said.
Normally the town pays RSU 36 bus drivers to drive buses for the recreation trips and Jay pays its bus drivers to take Jay children to Livermore Falls schools.
Jay has kept money in its recreation transportation budget in case buses and drivers can be found outside of the school district and Livermore Falls selectmen have decided to do the same.
Flagg said she and Jay Town Manager Ruth Cushman are hoping that the school system will take over the summer recreation program in the future.
