VERDUN, Quebec — You couldn’t blame Matthew Bissonnette for being a bit charged up Friday.
The Maineiacs’ forward, one of two fistfuls of Montreal-area natives on the Lewiston roster, had a chance to see — and play postseason hockey in front of — friends and family.
And did he ever give them a show.
In what might have been his best game of the season, Bissonnette had a hat trick by the end of the second period, and was a force for the Montreal Junior to handle all game long.
Faced with a 2-0 deficit in the first frame, Bissonnette took the ice with the team’s second power-play unit. The first team left the faceoff in the Montreal zone and Bissonnette, who plays on the point for the power play, reaped the benefits. He took a feed at the right point, curled to the middle and snapped a shot toward the cage. The puck appeared to carom off a pair of sticks in front, beating Montreal keeper Jean-Francois Berube high glove.
Bissonnette’s second offering was much cleaner, a roof job at the tail end of a 2-on-1 up high that he tucked neatly under the crossbar so tightly that it bounced out of the net like it had hit the post.
His third offering was a quick wrist shot that beat Berube low blocker on a feed from fellow Montreal-area native Stefan Fournier. Bissonnette, Fournier and Michael Chaput skated together for the Lac St. Louis Lions when they were younger. The three have been reunited late in the season as a line for the Maineiacs.
