MECHANIC FALLS — Two people were killed and two others severely injured Friday night in a car crash on Elm Street near the Poland town line.

Officials were not releasing the names of the victims, but a friend of all four said at the scene that all were young and from the area.

The two injured people were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Mechanic Falls Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fifield said the car carrying the four was headed north when it skidded out of control and struck trees across from 403 Elm St. The crash occurred at the end of a curve, with the small vehicle landing in a clearing next to a camper trailer.

A nearby resident said he heard screeching tires and then a crash. The accident was reported shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Fire crews from Mechanic Falls, Poland and Auburn were at the scene to extricate some of the people.

Mechanic Falls police were assisted by Oxford Police Department and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. Maine State Police will reconstruct the accident, Fifield said.
