The hits keep coming for two local college baseball stars and former teammates.

Now seniors, Ethan Guerette of Husson University and Mike Eaton of the University of Southern Maine each lead their team in most major offensive categories at the season’s halfway point.

Guerette, a middle infielder, sets the pace for Husson with a .378 batting average. He also tops the Eagles in doubles (11), slugging percentage (.573) and runs scored (28) and has seven stolen bases.

Eaton, an outfielder who also has been a relief pitcher throughout his career at Southern Maine, has 30 hits to lead the Huskies. He’s hitting .421 with four home runs and 21 RBIs and a .708 slugging percentage.

Named Little East Conference player of the week for the period ending March 20, Eaton actually saved his most monstrous effort for the following weekend. He belted a grand slam in a 13-6 victory over Benedictine on March 26 in Auburndale, Fla.

Guerette and Eaton graduated from Oak Hill High School, where they were part of a Class B championship team. Both men also helped win an American Legion state title for Monmouth Post 204.

Throwing heat

Two sophomore pitchers also are making an impact at Southern Maine.

Nick Douglass of Poland is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA. His 21 strikeouts in 19 innings lead the Huskies’ staff. Opponents are batting .229 against Douglass.

In one start and five total appearances, Ryan Yates of Norway (Oxford Hills) owns a 3.86 ERA and has averaged nearly a strikeout per inning.

Pretty good, for starters

University of Maine track and field enjoyed a successful start to its outdoor season with a boost from three first-year competitors.

Matt York of Mechanic Falls (Poland) won the high jump in a home meet against Bates last Sunday.

On the women’s side, both 2010 Sun Journal all-region track athletes of the year have made a triumphant transition.

Allison Fereshetian of Turner (Leavitt) won the 400-meter hurdles in the meet against Bates. Auburn’s Ashten Hackett (Edward Little) finished fourth in the same event.

Net gains

He’s not quite at his record-shattering, nation-leading scoring pace of a year ago, but Lewiston’s Ben Landry still has no problem finding the net for the Husson men’s lacrosse team.

Through nine games, Landry has logged 15 goals and two assists. His goal total ranks second on the team, while the 17 total points are third-most for Husson. Landry’s 75 total shots lead the Eagles.

Landry, a junior midfielder and back, erupted for six goals in a 14-3 victory over Saint Joseph’s on March 26. He also had hat tricks against Curry and Norwich, both losses.

Last spring, Landry notched 81 goals and 16 assists and topped the NCAA Division III leader board for most of the season. He scored 31 goals as a freshman.

Oak Hill product Nick Brown, also a junior midfielder, has five goals for the Eagles.

Record collection grows

Matt Harmon of Auburn (Edward Little) didn’t even seem to blink in the transition from indoor to outdoor track for USM.

Harmon was honored as Little East field athlete of the week after setting a school record in the hammer throw at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational in Fitchburg, Mass.

His distance of 161 feet, 10 inches was good for sixth place in the event and cleared the ECAC championship qualifying threshold. Harmon also took fifth in shot put (43-8).

It was Southern Maine’s second straight segment on the Little East honor roll. Tim Even of Stoneham (Fryeburg Academy) reaped track athlete of the week recognition after winning the 5,000-meter run at the Bridgewater (Mass.) Invitational.

In the Fitchburg meet, freshman Steve Giorgetti, also formerly of EL, finished sixth in javelin.
