FAYETTE — Stanley E. Bamford, 86, a resident of Moose Hill Road, Fayette, died Sunday, April 10, at his home.

He was born May 25, 1924, in Livermore, the son of George and Lena (Rose) Bamford. He attended school in Fayette. He joined the U.S. Army, where he served in Company B, 672nd Amphibious Tractor Battalion, in the Philippines. He participated in the liberation of prisoners at Los Banos Concentration Camp on the island of Luzon.

On Dec. 12, 1946, he married Ardis Wilcox; they moved to Moose Hill where they made their home and raised their sons. Ardis passed away Jan. 26, 1996.

As a teenager, he used his father’s 1935 truck to help build Route 17 in Fayette. In the 1950s he was road foreman for the town of Fayette, building and maintaining many of the roads. He, along with Bill Livermore and Linwood Brown, built the town’s first firetruck. He was elected and served as Fayette selectman from 1976 to 1978, 1982 to 1984 and 1985 to 1988. He also served as road commissioner for many years. The Fayette town report was dedicated to him in 2005 in gratitude for his many years of community service.

In 1959, he purchased an automobile garage and ran Bamford’s Garage on Kent’s Hill until his retirement in 1978, at which time he purchased a skidder and he and his brother, Robert, operated Bamford’s Wood Products. Having served the town for so many years as selectman and road commissioner, he, even in his later years, still drove around town and plowed out the elderly at no charge.

One of the founders of the Rainbow Riders Snowmobile Club, he spent many hours building and grooming trails, many of which are still used today. In addition to being an avid snowmobiler, he also enjoyed riding his ATV with his wife, sons and grandchildren.
