AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage has nominated Maine State Police 27-year veteran Robert Williams of Vassalboro as chief of the state police force.

LePage and Public Safety Commissioner John Morris announced Williams’ nomination on Monday. Williams faces confirmation review by the Legislature.

Williams, who is 47, currently serves as the deputy chief of the department, holding the rank of lieutenant colonel. He would succeed Col. Patrick Fleming, who’s been state police chief for the past four years.

Williams is a graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta and holds a master’s degree in administration from Husson University. He graduated from the FBI’s National Academy in Quantico, Va.
