PORTLAND — Portland’s police chief says a burglary suspect was shot in the shoulder and neck when he drove his car at two officers who were approaching him after he drove down a dead-end street.

Chief James Craig said Monday that 29-year-old Jonathan Mitchell of Bangor remained in police custody at Maine Medical Center in stable condition after Sunday morning’s shooting.

Craig said Mitchell refused to stop when police tried to pull him over after his estranged wife called police at 4:40 a.m. Sunday to report that he had unlawfully entered her apartment on Allen Avenue and wouldn’t leave.

Craig said that after being shot by Officer Robert Miller, Mitchell sped away before police later located him at a nearby apartment. None of the officers were injured.
