BANGOR — The Auburn Youth Hockey Peewee Eagles won the championship of the 2011 annual Bangor Youth Hockey Friendship tournament at Sawyer Arena.

Auburn won all five of its games in the tournament, allowing only six goals. The Eagles tamed the Penobscot Valley Jr. Black Bears, 9-1; quieted the Maine Coast Storm, 7-1; iced Bangor Red, 4-2; held off the Huskies, 3-2, in the semifinals; and shut out Central Maine Youth Hockey, 5-0, in the final.

The Eagles played well all weekend. They handled the preliminary games against Penobscot and Maine Coast without much trouble. Bangor offered a stiffer challenge skating with the Eagles, keeping the game tied until late in the second period, when Auburn pulled away for good.

Evan Emerson scored with five seconds remaining to cap the best game of the weekend against the Huskies.

Eagles captain Matt Verrill scored early in the second period, and AYH hung on desperately as the Huskies built momentum. Goalie Savannah Shaw turned away several solid Huskies scoring chances.

The Huskies finally scored with 3:30 to play to make it 1-1. Emerson took back the lead with 1:48 to play. The Huskies pulled the goalie to create a smothering rush, keeping the action in front of the Auburn goal. Shaw was tough, but the Huskies slid one in with just 39 seconds remaining to tie it at 2-2.

Auburn’s No. 1 line had the last word. Jacob Lawrence and Emerson won the faceoff and took the puck into the Huskies zone, where Emerson picked top corner with five seconds left in the game.

The Championship game was all Eagles. Verrill had a hat trick, and Shaw posted a shutout.

For the weekend, Emerson and Verrill each logged 10 goals and one assist. Lawrence added four goals and four assists. Hunter Soucy chipped in two goals and two assists. Other assists went to Connor Samson (two), Thomas Bodge, Dana Latlippe and Shaw.
