100 years ago,1911

There is much enthusiasm over the proposed “Sugar-Nuts” sale for the benefit of the Androscoggin Boys’ Club. Yesterday, Supt. Pease was hustling about perfecting arrangements for the great sale. The Berry Paper Co. will furnish free of cost paper cones in which to put the “Sugar-Nuts.” Fowles, the Auburn confectioner, will make the sweets and a corps of young ladies will have charge of filling and sealing the cones which will then be sent to the various distributing stations. “Sugar-Nuts” are a new and dainty confection that will be introduced in these cities on Patriots Day, for the first time.

50 years ago, 1961

Students at Walton Junior High School will enjoy their annual Sadie Hawkins dance at the school this evening, when dancing will be in order from 7 to 10 o’clock. Those attending are to be in costume.

The dance is sponsored by the Dramatics Club of the school, of which Hugh Keene is faculty advisor.

25 years ago, 1986

Tonia Curran, age 14, daughter of Jean-Paul and Claudette Curran of Lewiston, has been selected to compete in the 1986 Miss TEEN Pageant to be held at the Waterville Opera House on May 30 and 31. In her pageant, she and other 13- to 18-year-olds will be honored and recognized for their personal achievements in school and in their communities. To participate in the pageant, contestants must maintain a B-grade average in school. Miss Curran graduated from St. Joseph’s School as top girl student in her class.
