MECHANIC FALLS — Speed was the likely cause of a fatal crash on Elm Street last week that claimed the lives of two teenagers, police said, and fast driving appears to be a trend this spring.
Adam Nile, 19, of Poland, was driving the Volkswagen GTI when it crashed and slammed into a tree the night of April 8, police said. Nile was killed, as was a passenger 18-year-old Britney Lee Wentworth, also of Poland.
Maine State Police reconstructed the crash. Investigators did not say how fast Nile was believed to have been driving, although Maine Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland wrote in a bulletin it was “considerably faster than the 35 mph speed limit.”
Two other passengers were hurt in the crash.
Police said they have been witnessing young people driving too fast in other areas, as well, since the beginning of April.
In Winslow, a newly licensed teenager driving at 85 mph flipped an SUV three times, injuring himself and three passengers.
Maine State Police said they clocked 23-year-old Jesse Lyons of Poland going 110 mph this week on the Maine Turnpike. Lyons, who was cited for speeding, had been clocked going 98 mph on the turnpike just a week before, police said.
On Monday, state police said they clocked 18-year-old Ryan Cyr, of Auburn, going 98 mph on the turnpike in Falmouth. Cyr, who had a pair of 16-year-old girls in the car with him, was also cited.
