LIVERMORE FALLS — Members of the local American Legion are organizing a hill of flags to honor and remember veterans the week of May 27 to June 3.

The George Bunten Post 10’s plan is for people to buy an American flag through the Post, and Legion members will place them on the hill between Park Street and the RSU 36 Central Office on Cedar Street to commemorate “Veterans Hill 2011.”

The American Legion in Livermore Falls welcomes people to honor and remember a veteran by placing a flag in honor or memory of a veteran who is a family member, friend or veteran, Post 10 Adjutant Don Simoneau said Wednesday.

The 12- by 18-inch flags will be placed for a donation of $5, he said.

If people would like to have a flag placed in honor or memory of a veteran, they are asked to send a check to George Bunten Post 10, 17 Reynolds Ave., Livermore Falls, ME 04254.

People interested in participating are to send the check, made out to “George Bunten Post 10″ and in the note area of the check or note attached to the check, please indicate “In Honor of (name)” or “In Memory of (name).”

After the week of display, the flags placed will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Post 10 if the person or organization would like to keep the flags for a keepsake, he said. Along with the flag, people will receive a card noting who the flag was placed for and by whom.

“We have 1,608 veterans buried locally and over 5,200 who have served in the U.S. military from Livermore, Livermore Falls, Jay and Fayette areas since the Revolutionary War until today,” Simoneau said. “Also, we have many others from surrounding communities such as Wayne, Leeds, Canton, Wilton, Chesterville and Readfield who served with honor and pride in the U.S. military.”

“This is a chance for all of us to remember and honor a veteran,” Simoneau said. “Please be part of this program when we place this Mass of Flags on what will be called for one week ‘Veterans Hill.’”

Everyone is invited to take part.
