Two Lewiston young men, students in the College of Technology at the University of Maine, have established that the sun shines first on Mars Hill in Maine on Easter and the Fourth of July.
Normand Caron of Lisbon Street and Paul Lavoie of Franklin Stret found that from March 15 to Sept. 30, the sun’s rays hit first on Mars Hill, while for the remainder of the year Cadillac Mountain is the first Maine land to greet the dawn. A fast-moving fire burned about eight acres of grass at the corner of the Old Danville and Turkey Lane roads Sunday afternoon.
Auburn Fire Department Chief Clifton S. Smith said about 20 firefighters, volunteer firemen and neighbors fought the blaze for more than an hour. Fire trucks were first called to the scene at 1:47 p.m.
Hay, trees and dead wood fueled the fire, which was spread by gusty winds.
