FARMINGTON — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Franklin County is offering a pruning workshop on Saturday, April 30.

The workshop is geared toward the many home gardeners whose joy over a new fruit tree or blueberry bush is soon replaced with “what do I do with this plant now? How do I prune it?”

The session will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. April 30 in Room 101 of the Roberts Learning Center at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Dave Fuller, agriculture and non-timber forest products professional for UMaine Cooperative Extension, will teach why pruning is necessary and what kinds of cuts to make. Participants will learn by doing pruning in a hands-on demonstration.

The class starts in the classroom and then will move to a yard with apple, peach, pear and high-bush blueberry plants, where pruning will be demonstrated. Dress to be outside and bring your favorite pruning tool.

The class will be held rain or shine. Preregistration is required. To register, or for more information, call 778-4650 or 1-800-287-1478.

A $10 fee is payable the day of the class.

Please contact the Franklin County Extension office 10 days prior to the event if you need special accommodations to attend.

For more than 90 years, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension has supported UMaine’s land-grant public education role by conducting community-driven, research-based programs in every Maine county.
