SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Russell Moat of Garland Swamp Road, Tripp Lake, died March 31.

He was born Nov. 14, 1951, in Montour Falls, N.Y., the son of Carl L. Moat and Ann Hayes. Russell graduated from Canisteo Central High School in Canisteo, N.Y., and attended SUNY at Oswego, N.Y. He graduated from the University of Louisville, with a master’s degree in social work.

He served with the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky., and Okinawa, Japan, retiring from the Army National Guard with the rank of major.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his son, Seth M. Moat.

He leaves behind a son, Joshua E. Moat of Dover, N.H.; four sisters, Julia Phillips of Uncasville, Conn., Colleen Jenkins of Middlebury, Ind., Donna Wortinger of Goshen, Ind., and Tammi Eller of Quaker Hill, Conn.; and many friends and loved ones in Maine and Costa Rica.

Russell worked for the state of Maine as a child protective case manager and was a social worker in private practice for many years, specializing in various forms of abuse.

A man with many talents, Russell was a gifted nature photographer and carpenter. Since moving to Maine in 1977, he renovated many homes, always having a work in progress. A longtime member of BMW CCA, he was a gifted auto restorer. He also enjoyed trips through New England and Costa Rica on his motorcycle.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful people of Costa Rica and his vast network of friends in Maine for their love and support.
