LISBON — The Lisbon Police Department will join with the National Drug Enforcement Administration in its second National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Our sole purpose,” Lt. Daniel Michel said, “is to provide for a safe collection site where the public can drop off their unwanted or unused prescription drugs.” Last year, approximately 3,000 state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the nation participated in the “take-back,” and more than 121 tons of pills were collected.

In Maine, 7,820 pounds of prescription drugs were collected last year, ranking Maine No. 1 in the national collection effort based on population. Over all, Maine ranked 11th in the United States by state and had the second largest collection in New England. The effort was considered a huge success, preventing unused and potentially dangerous drugs, particularly controlled substances, from falling into the wrong hands, Lt. Michel added.

Two teams of Lisbon police officers will be at the following locations and times to receive any outdated, unwanted or unused prescription drugs.

Woodside Apartments (parking lot), 10-10:30 a.m.; Colonial Gardens Mobile Home Park (mailboxes), 10:30-11 a.m.; Food City parking lot, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; MTM Community Center parking lot 12:30-1:30 p.m.; Woodgate Apartments parking lot, 1:30-2 p.m.

Also Farwell Mill Apartments parking lot, 10:30-11:30 a.m.; Lisbon Senior Village, 11:30 a.m. to noon; Grimmels and Rowumbo Estates Mobile Home Parks (at Grimmels mailboxes), 12-12:45 p.m.; Town and Country Mobile Home Park (mailboxes), 12:45-1:30 p.m.; Heritage Knolls Apartments parking lot, 1:30-2 p.m.

In addition, an officer will also be available during this time (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at the police station for drop off. Residents from neighboring communities are welcome. For further information, contact Lt. Michel at 353-2500 with any questions concerning this program.
