STRONG — The Friends of the Strong Public Library will have their first organizational meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, in the library. Library director Cheryl McCleery has great ideas to expand the library’s services, and she is eager to share them with the community.

“I’d love to have some of our community members’ ideas for programs and services, so I’m really hoping for a good turnout,” she said.

Two new programs for children will start on Thursday, May 5.

The first is a six-week storytime at 10:30 a.m., offered on Thursdays for children up to 5 years old. The program will include songs, finger plays and a story for infants, followed by a story and craft activity for older pre-school children. Also on May 5, at 11:30 a. m., the library will offer a half-hour program for home-schooled children in grades 3–5. This four-week program will focus on library searches, using print and online sources.

Children can get their own library card to check out books each week. For more information, call 684-4003 on Tuesdays or Thursdays, 1–7 p. m., or Saturdays, 10 a. m.–2 p. m.

McCleery said the library will be collecting food donations from May 9-14.

“As part of the Maine State Library’s ‘Food, Not Fines’ program, we will join other Maine libraries to encourage patrons to donate nonperishable food items,” McCleery said. “Instead of paying fines, when they return overdue books and movies, they can donate food.” All the food will go to local food cupboards. “It’s is a good chance to return overdue library items while helping others,” she said.
