This is in response to the April 26 Sun Journal story “Drug-test plan assailed.”

I can understand that people with severe mental issues are at a higher risk for drug addiction, but I do not think that should have an effect on people receiving state aid.

There is a proposed bill that would suspend benefits for MaineCare recipients who test positive for illegal drugs. Maybe if there are fewer people on state aid who are using the funding to promote their drug addiction, the state can look into having better treatments for individuals who have severe mental issues and have been officially diagnosed with mental disorders.

Usually, someone who has been diagnosed with a mental disorder will receive state aid in other areas than MaineCare.
