AUGUSTA — Two honor students at Central Maine Community College, Gail Bennett and Suzanne Cohen, have been named to the Maine Community College System All-Maine Academic Team. They were among the 14 students honored recently at a ceremony in Augusta hosted by the MCCS board of trustees.

The All-Maine Academic Team is part of the national Phi Theta Kappa program, an international honor society for two-year colleges. Students are nominated and selected for the team by their college based on outstanding academic achievement, leadership and service. All awardees receive a $500 scholarship.

Bennett is an accounting major who plans to graduate this summer. She has served as president of the CMCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and has been active with the Women in Technology group. She has volunteered as a peer tutor working with students in business math, algebra and accounting. Gail has also served as a student mentor working to ease the transition to college for new students. She lives in Otisfield with her husband and two sons.

Cohen is also an accounting major who plans to transfer to a four-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree. She has been very active in Phi Theta Kappa for which she served as officer-at-large. In addition to devoting many hours as a peer tutor and mentor with the TRiO program, Cohen has assisted in providing transfer workshops and has volunteered at transfer fairs. She resides in Sabattus with her husband and three children.
