Youth derby

AUBURN — The Auburn Rec Dept. and the Auburn Exchange Club will hold youth fishing derbies at Pettengill Park Pond on two consecutive weekends. The pond will be stocked with more than 300 brook trout ranging in size from 8 to 14 inches.

The derby for youths ages 9-15 will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7. The derby for youths ages 3-8 will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14. The cost is $5 per person, payable the day of the event. Rain or shine.

Hulett officers

AUBURN — The Capt. Frank W. Hulett VFW Post 1603 and its Ladies Auxiliary will have their Installation of Officers for the 2011-2012 year at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the post home, 588 Minot Ave. before its regular meetings. Installing the Post will be Arthur J. Roy, past state commander and installing the Ladies Auxiliary will be Joan Hebert, past state president. All members are asked to attend. LEWISTON — Mary Dillingham Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the home of Lois Gilbert on Genest Street. This is the annual business meeting, and the group plans to set the program for the coming year as well. Bring a bag lunch. Chairmen and officers should bring their reports.

All prospective members are welcome to attend, and genealogists stand ready to help in your research. All women over the age of 18 who can prove a direct blood line to a Revolutionary era Patriot, or to someone who gave aid to the cause are eligible for membership.

Teacher grants

LEWISTON — A reception honoring the recipients of this year’s Lewiston Education Fund Teacher Grants will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Montello Elementary School, 407 East Ave.

Science event

ORONO — The 2011 Citizen Science Symposium will be held at the University of Maine on Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13. The primary objective of the symposium is to share information about environmental citizen science, where volunteers assist scientists in monitoring and data collection.

The two day event will conclude with three field trips, including a vernal pool community-monitoring demonstration at the University Forests and a GET WET! (Groundwater Education Through Water Evaluation and Testing) presentation.
