DIXFIELD — The Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 board appointed Chris Moreau the new assistant principal/athletic director at Dirigo High School on Monday night.

Moreau, of Jay, has served as assistant principal at Lisbon High School and at South Portland High School for a total of eight years.

Moreau replaces Charles Swan who has taken a position, beginning in the fall, as principal of Dirigo Elementary School in Peru.

The board plans to appoint a new athletic director/part-time teacher for Mountain Valley High School at its May 23 meeting.

The previous full-time athletic director, John Bernard, is retiring at the end of the current school year. In an effort to reduce costs region-wide, that position will be part time, and the person who is named will teach two classes.

The athletic director’s half-time position at Dirigo Middle School was reduced to a $10,000 stipend position.

In other matters, the board approved a senior class trip for students at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School during the Memorial Day weekend. About half of the class of 40 will tour Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and end the trip by whitewater rafting in Maine.

Karolyn Buotte, a Dirigo High School teacher and Outing Club adviser, was granted permission to take three, fewer than 10-student groups, on overnight hiking and backpacking trips to the Rangeley area. The first will take place on May 20-21 and the remaining two will happen after school ends in mid-June.
