JAY — The Jay Historical Society will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at its new archives building, next to the Holmes-Crafts Homestead on Jay Hill. Guest speaker for the evening will be Barry M. Allen, a Professional Land Surveyor, who will present a program on the early surveying of Maine and New England. The public is invited to attend.

Allen illustrates his talk with maps and historical commentary. One aspect of Allen’s presentation is based upon the 1808 field book and journal of James Irish Jr. as he and his party surveyed the eastern portion of the town of Woodstock.

Allen, who works for Maine-Land Development Consultants of Livermore Falls, has surveyed land in every county in Maine for 34 years following his graduation from the University of Maine in Orono. He is a 10th generation Mainer whose family settled in Jay in 1791. Barry, the son of Gladys Knox Allen and the late Lawrence W. Allen, grew up in Jay Village and spent summers working on his grandfather’s farm on Jay Hill. Allen also has the honor of being an undefeated, 11-time champion of the MPBN television series “So You Think You Know Maine.” Allen resides in Norway with his wife and three cats.
