LEWISTON — A local man who police say held up two Twin Cities’ Burger King restaurants last weekend by walking up to their drive-through windows with a handgun and demanding money was arrested earlier this week during an unrelated traffic stop and charged with robbery.
Todd Johnson, 31, of 18 Sabattus St., Lewiston, was stopped by Auburn Police on Tuesday on several warrants. Lewiston police detectives had developed information about Johnson in connection with the Burger King robberies. A handgun that police believe was used in the robberies was recovered during the traffic stop.
The first robbery was reported Friday at 704 Main St., Lewiston. Employees said a man approached the drive-through window on foot, showed a gun and demanded money.
The second robbery came a day later at the Burger King at 333 Center St., Auburn, with the robber using the same method.
Detectives at the Lewiston and Auburn police departments developed enough evidence to charge Johnson with Class A robbery in connection with the Lewiston robbery, police said in a written statement Thursday. That case is expected to be presented by county prosecutors to a grand jury in June.
If indicted and convicted, Johnson could face up to 30 years in prison. He was being held Thursday afternoon at the Androscoggin County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail, police said.
