BIDDEFORD — The University of New England has named Dora Anne Mills, former Maine health director, as its vice president for clinical affairs She will join UNE on Sept. 1.

Mills, who was director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention for nearly 15 years, was fired by Gov. Paul LePage from her job as medical director of MaineCare in February. She had been appointed to the MaineCare post in December, about a month before LePage took office.

“Dr. Mills’ outstanding record of public health service and collaboration makes her the ideal choice to lead UNE’s interprofessional health care education efforts and expand our public health and clinical outreach programs in Maine,” UNE president Danielle Ripich, said Thursday in a news release

“Dr. Mills is recognized as the leading public health expert in our state,” said Joel A. Kase, president of the Maine Osteopathic Association and division chief for public health at the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Farmington native received her MD degree from University of Vermont College of Medicine, and her Master of Public Health from Harvard University.

In December Mills announced she was leaving the state CDC, saying it was time for a change.

She was the second person in the Office of MaineCare Services to be dismissed by Gov. LePage’s administration. Anthony Marple, the state’s former Medicaid director, also was fired.
