FARMINGTON — An accident in front of the Mt. Blue Shopping Center on Thursday morning sent one driver to the hospital and left the other with a citation for failing to yield on entering a public way.

Brittany Drapeau, 21, of Farmington was attempting to exit the Wilton Road shopping center in front of Save-A-Lot food store, Farmington police Sgt. Peter Barton said. She wanted to turn left heading toward Wilton.

The second driver, Joanne Smith, 73, of Farmington was traveling east toward Farmington in the right-hand lane of the four-lane highway. She was driving a 2010 Dodge van.

Drapeau said she looked both ways twice and but did not see the vehicle approaching, he said. She drove out in a 2003 Ford Focus and her car hit  Smith’s. Both vehicles came to a stop on the opposite side of the highway.

Smith was transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital by NorthStar Ambulance with no apparent injuries, but she was in pain, he said. Drapeau was not injured.

By midafternoon, Smith had been treated and released, according to a spokesman at FMH.

Heavy rain was falling at the time of the 10:45 a.m. accident. Members of Farmington Fire and Rescue responded to help with heavy traffic.

Both vehicles received significant damage, Barton said.
