The biggest thing in the circus line to visit Lewiston this season will be the Ringling Brother’s mammoth aggregation. In its entirety, from the 1,280 persons employed, the 108 cage zoo, 40 good-natured elephants, 680 horses, 14 acres of tents, to the pink lemonade man the circus will come from Bangor in 85 double-length railroad cars and hold forth in this city on Saturday, June 10.
The enjoyment will begin with the great street parade, the largest and most magnificent ever organized. This feature is over three miles in length.
50 years ago, 1961
A French spelling bee sponsored by the League of French Speaking Societies of Lewiston-Auburn will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Lewiston City Hall.
Pupils in seventh and eighth grades from Lewiston, Auburn, Westbrook, Sanford, Springvale, Lisbon, Augusta, Winslow and Waterville will compete.
25 years ago, 1986
A resolution opposing next month’s statewide referendum on obscenity was unanimously adopted by the Auburn Public Library trustees Tuesday night.
The trustees had discussed the matter at past meetings and decided to go on record against the question because, if approved by voters, the referendum could have far-reaching implications for libraries, as well as museums, theaters and galleries due to a lack of protection from censorship.
