GILEAD — Heavy rains this week bumped plans to early June to float about 300 brown and rainbow trout a few miles down the Androscoggin River and release them into likely hiding places and feeding habitats.
The trip by members of the Upper Andro Anglers Alliance was to start at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, from the Gilead boat launch on the river.
On Wednesday, alliance spokeswoman Wende Gray said the trip has been changed to Thursday, June 2. The start time and place remains unchanged.
“If the weather remains iffy, we can move it to June 9 and still have cool enough water to place the fish,” Gray said.
She said Steve Tremblay from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s Casco Fish Hatchery suggested the change of plans.
On Wednesday morning, Tremblay recommended a later stocking date due to high water levels from the rains.
In addition to the alliance’s trip, Tremblay said that should water levels drop to more acceptable levels, the department would like to stock the river by truck with 2,000 rainbow trout that are 10 to 15 inches long and 2,000 brown trout that are 8 to 10 inches long.
