DIXFIELD — Registration is now opened for the fun and affordable one-of-a-kind summer camp opportunity for students who will be in grades 8-11 in the fall of 2011. “Summer Scrub Club” is a camp designed to introduce students to a wide variety of careers available in health care.

Students will participate in many hands-on activities and demonstrations. They will be able to do everything from practicing their suturing skills using pigs’ feet to casting an arm or leg and getting a first aid course. All aspects of health care will be covered including doctors, home health, informational systems, dental field, marketing and emergency services. Activities include using the Mediman, a manikin that has a heartbeat and blood pressure and can even be programmed to die or to get better; injecting oranges; a dental simulator to work on teeth; CPR; a mock accident and much more.

The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1-5. The cost is $50 for the entire week, which includes bus transportation to and from Dirigo High School.

The GEAR UP / Partnerships for Success program at the University of Maine at Farmington in partnership with the Education Department at Franklin Memorial coordinate the camp and encourage students from all area schools to take advantage of this opportunity.
