POLAND — Dana Lee’s work in Poland is over.
Selectmen voted unanimously Wednesday to accept Lee’s resignation as town manager, effective immediately.
They then unanimously approved a measure to begin the search for Lee’s replacement.
The votes followed more than an hour of closed-door discussion. Both the Board of Selectmen and Lee declined to comment when it was over.
On Friday, Lee sent a short resignation letter to members of the Board of Selectmen.
On Monday, he said he’d grown tired of complaints from the public and accusations that he was hiding secrets, squandering tax money or bending rules for some residents, he said. The complaints from people had inflicted too much stress.
“It just gets overwhelming,” Lee said Monday. “You have to make a choice whether it’s worth it anymore.”
Lee, 49, has served as Poland town manager for four years. Before that, he led Mechanic Falls for 16 years. Between those jobs, he worked as a consultant for the Maine Municipal Association and other organizations.
A native of Falmouth, he lives in Mechanic Falls.
On Monday, he said he had no future plans. He said he may work as a consultant, but serving as another town’s administrator was unlikely.
“I’ve learned never to say never,” he said.
In his resignation letter, Lee had offered to stay on the job until a replacement was found.
“I still believe in good government,” he said Monday. “I believe in helping people through the power of government.”
