PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded an additional $3.4 million for improvements and upgrades to railroad tracks that run from Portland to Brunswick.

Wednesday’s announcement comes two weeks after the Northern New England Transportation Authority was granted $20.8 million for track improvements on the Downeaster passenger rail line that runs between Portland and Boston.

In announcing the grant, U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins said the new grant is going toward infrastructure improvements to extend the Downeaster line another 30 miles to Brunswick. The new service is due to begin in the fall of 2012.
