AUBURN — A Leeds man who was arrested at the courthouse last week pleaded not guilty Tuesday to unrelated drug charges.
Corey Lamontagne, 34, was in Androscoggin County Superior Court on Friday to answer allegations in connection to a stolen tractor. Police said he stole the tractor locally and tried to sell it to undercover drug agents.
On Tuesday, Lamontagne was dressed in a jail suit, answering to a spate of drug charges.
He pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, all Class A felonies, each punishable by up to 30 years in prison. He also pleaded not guilty to a count of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. In a separate charge, he faces another count of aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs.
A judge set bail at $10,000 cash, twice the amount he had been given earlier.
He also faces a felony charge of receiving stolen property, for which he could be sentenced to 10 years in prison, if convicted.
Prosecutors had been seeking bail set at $25,000 cash, noting, “These are very serious charges.” Lamontagne had prior convictions, including drug trafficking, they added.
Lamontagne had given officials his father’s address, which made it hard to track him down, Assistant District Attorney Josh Robbins said.
“He was trying to secret himself,” Robbins said.
But Lamontagne’s lawyer, Leonard Sharon, pointed out that his client had arrived at the courthouse last week at the appointed date and hour for his arraignment on the tractor-related charge.
His brother had posted his bail and would have forfeited it had Lamontagne failed to show up, Sharon said. Lamontagne’s family was in the courtroom to support him.
