KITTERY, Maine (AP) — A sign declaring that Maine is “Open for Business” has been stolen from alongside Interstate 95 in southern Maine.

Adrienne Bennett, spokeswoman for Maine Gov. Paul LePage, says the $1,300 sign — funded through private donations — disappeared over Memorial Day weekend.

The sign was installed in March at the gateway to the state in Kittery, underneath a sign reading, “Welcome to Maine, The Way Life Should Be.” It was meant to drive home LePage’s priority of creating new business and more jobs.

Bennett says the 8-by-6 sign won’t be replaced. She says it’s unfortunate that someone would steal a sign that has a positive message for the state, but that the administration remains committed to its jobs agenda.
