AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The Maine House has voted to let Gov. Paul LePage’s first veto stand.
Representatives voted Thursday to sustain a bill that would have prevented insurance companies from including clauses in their contracts with health care providers requiring the providers to give the insurers the lowest rates providers negotiate with any carrier.
Doctors and physical therapists wanted the ban on such clauses, claiming they’re anti-competitive. The original bill received unanimous committee support.
LePage vetoed the bill, saying businesses have a right to contract with each other as they deem appropriate.
However, LePage is submitting a new compromise bill which he says will satisfy his and the bill’s supporters concerns.
LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett says that bill will be considered next year.
