Elliot Ave.
LEWISTON — In a game that took two hours and 20 minutes to complete, Elite Auto “walked” away with a 5-2 extra-inning victory over United Ambulance in Elliot Ave. Little League Major Division action.
In what was a tight contest throughout, pitching proved United’s undoing, as Elite scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning on four walks and a pair of errors.
The game began as a true pitching gem. Jean-Luc Dostie threw four scoreless innings for United, allowing just two hits while fanning seven. Elite starter Evan Cox was nearly as good, keeping United off the scoreboard until the third inning.
Isaac Escobar drove in the game’s first run. Cox was chased in the third when Eddie Turgeon doubled to right center and Dostie drove him home to make the score 2-0.
Gage Cote came in to spell Cox on the mound, ending the rally with two of his eventual 13 strikeouts.
Elite’s patience at the plate paid off in the top of the fifth after Dostie was pulled for pitch count reasons. Reliever Jess Lopez struggled to find the zone. Brock Belanger opened the inning with a sharp knock up the middle, while four walks led to Lopez’s early exit, leaving the score tied at two.
Reliever Damien St.Pierre ended the threat with a strikeout. St.Pierre silenced Elite’s bats for two more innings as Cote did the same for Elite.
With two weekend games ahead of them, United (5-4) was forced to conserve their pitchers’ pitch counts. Escobar took the mound in the top of the eighth, walking four and striking out two. Combined with a pair of errors, Elite (6-4) scored three runs without the benefit of a hit. Cote polished off the game in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
Lopez and St.Pierre had the other hits for United. Logan Freve had a pair and Ben Gosselin got a base knock for Elite.
