CANTON — Lake Anasagunticook Dam Committee Chairman Malcolm Ray shared engineering plans for the new dam on Whitney Brook and the associated boat launch ramp with committee members Monday night.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is funding the boat launch ramp, which will be concrete planked on the brook to provide access to the lake. There will be 12 parking places for vehicles with boat trailers and six for vehicles without trailers. There will also be a concrete pad for a portable toilet.
Canton must provide the state with an easement for the boat launch before it can proceed.
Plans for the boat launch and for the new dam will be on display at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 9, in the town office, followed by a public hearing at 6 p.m. to discuss the boat launch and a citizens’ initiative concerning recording and broadcasting the selectmen’s meetings.
A selectmen’s meeting will follow the public hearing.
There will be an article at the annual town meeting on June 25 regarding the easement to the state.
The dam plans are currently being reviewed by the state, with approval is expected in two weeks. Ray said the bid process should take an additional two weeks, permitting construction to start in early July.
It is thought that the boat launch contract will go to the same contractor and both projects will be worked together.
Committee member Polly Bussiere said she had been working with the Department of Environmental Protection to obtain a grant for a multipurpose bridge across the brook in the area of the boat launch. The bridge will permit pedestrians, snowmobiles and ATVs to reach the trails on the east bank from the parking lot next to Route 140 and a convenience store/gas station.
Bussiere said the grant requires the recipient to fund 20 percent of the cost either with cash or in-kind contributions of labor and material. The local ATV and snowmobile clubs are expected to furnish the required in-kind labor, so there will be no expense to the Dam Committee for the bridge.
The next meeting of the committee will be June 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the town office.
