BRUNSWICK — Ralph C. Knowles Sr., 85, of 12 Stetson St., died Sunday, May 29, at Midcoast Hospital.
He was born in Greene, June 24, 1925, the son of Ralph W.C. and Edith Merrill Knowles. He was a graduate of Edward Little High School. He married Joyce Newton in Greene, Dec. 15, 1960, and they lived in Greene, where they operated a Guernsey farm and sold flowers for several years. Their experience with local florists prompted them to purchased Jones Greenhouse in Brunswick in 1968, which they operated as Flowers by Knowles for 30 years.
Always creative and artistic, Ralph had an eye for design; Joyce tended the books and together they built a reputation for their commitment to their customers and top-notch service.
As a young artist, Mr. Knowles was commissioned to paint the Ideal Guernsey Cow, which hangs in the National Headquarters for the American Guernsey Association. He had many interests, which included breeding champion German Roller Canaries, with which he won national championships. He also loved cooking, entertaining friends and working in his garden. In addition, he was an avid walker and hiker. Ralph’s Christian beliefs were lived out in the love and generous hospitality he showed to fellow church members, newcomers, Bowdoin students and the many acquaintances met on his walks.
He is survived by two sons, Temple L. Knowles and his wife, Beth, of North Anson and R. Cleveland Knowles and his wife, Tamara, of Lisbon Falls; a daughter, Laurie DeCamilla and her husband, Douglas C., of Brunswick; a sister, Muriel Knowles of Brunswick; a half brother, Bernard Howe of Greene; and 17 grandchildren.
Condolence may be expressed and a Tribute of his life viewed at www.brackettfuneralhome.com.
