Recently, my husband (who is currently in the U.S. Army Reserves and has served his country in the Army and Army Reserves for 34 years and counting, and who has done two tours in Iraq) and I were tagging outside of a store in Auburn for “Buddy Poppies” for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The “Buddy Poppy” fundraiser has been conducted since 1923. The poppies are made and assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals. The money goes to various programs to help veterans and their families, including widows and children of those veterans.
A couple walked by my husband and the gentleman went to reach in his pocket to donate. The wife looked at him and said: “Don’t! You gave too much already,” and with that, they walked away.
She must not realize just how much veterans have given and sacrificed, along with the current soldiers and their families. People should think about it.
