JAY — The School Committee held its last meeting Thursday.
The committee will no longer exist after July 1 when Jay and Regional School Unit 36, made up of the towns of Livermore and Livermore Falls, consolidate into one school system, RSU 73.
“This is the very last Jay School Committee meeting,” Chairwoman Mary Redmond-Luce said. “I approach this with both sadness — change is hard — and with hope.”
She said she believes the new school system will be best for students. She and three other members of the Jay School Committee are on the new RSU 73 school board.
“I do believe we are planning a school for the future,” Redmond-Luce said.
She said she is pleased that there will be familiar faces in administration next year. All three principals are staying in the district.
School administrators thanked the School Committee for its support of education and moving the Jay schools forward.
“I’m happy to be working with you folks on another board,” Jay High School Principal Gilbert Eaton said.
Superintendent Bob Wall thanked the board for its service and the support for education and the accomplishments that the students and staff achieved.
“It’s been a win-win-win-win situation in Jay. There have been wonderful accomplishments by staff and students,” Wall said.
Some of those achievements were highlighted Thursday and included the Jay High School Envirothon Team’s recent state championship, the five high school teams that competed in Wind Blade and Wind Storm Challenges and the high school’s robotics pre-engineering five teams that competed in the Southern Maine Vex Robotics Championships.
One of the latter teams went on to the world championship and earned the Teamwork Award. The award is presented to a group of teams from a single school or organization that demonstrates a season-long commitment to cooperation, unity and mutual respect. It is also presented to a school that has built a sustainable multi-team robotics program.
The Envirothon Team will also head to the world championships in Canada in July.
After a brief presentation and the board’s congratulations to students, it was cake time.
