Inspired by the work which the janitor Mr. Underwood has done to make the grounds of the Grammar school on Main Street, Lewiston, look a little better, the children of Miss Jordan’s class of the school recently brought brooms from their homes and helped to clean up the yard. The grounds now present a neat appearance.
50 years ago, 1961
Some 250 boys and girls, members of the Auburn school safety patrol, will be treated to an outing next Tuesday at Bear Pond Park.
Chief Alton E. Savage of Auburn police said the youngsters who have helped guard school crossings throughout the school year will be picked up by buses at the schools at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and will spend the day at Bear Pond Park.
It is expected the children will arrive at the park at 9:30 a.m. The return trip will start at about 3:30 p.m.

Critics of the law sometimes hold that its long arm isn’t long enough, and some say the study of law is for the birds.
Both adages appeared to fit an ornithological crisis Monday that had a pair of law clerks and an animal control officer ready to throw the book at a trio of pigeons that flew into the Androscoggin County law library in the County Building in Auburn during the weekend.
So far, the birds have ducked a barrage of paperback books the law clerks launched at them. They ducked the net swung by Joyce Abbott, the Auburn Police Department animal control officer, and successfully circled the prodding sticks pushed by others who tried to move the birds toward open windows.
