FARMINGTON — Winona Kenney Robbins, 95, a long-time resident of New Vineyard, died on June 1, at the Edgewood Rehab and Living Center.
She was born Jan. 11, 1916, in New Vineyard, the fourth child and only daughter of John C. and Nellie Kennedy Kenney. She was educated in the schools of New Vineyard and Farmington.
She married Arthur L. Robbins of New Vineyard on Dec. 30. 1933, in Farmington and together they operated a dairy farm in New Vineyard and delivered milk in the local community during their early married years. Upon her husband’s untimely death from a lumbering accident on Feb. 23, 1958, at the young age of 49, and she only 42, she continued their business of transportation and custodial services to the local school.
After the local school consolidated with SAD 9, she continued driving bus for the district for a total of 32 years without an accident, of which she was very proud. Winona was always caring and concerned for her family.
When her father passed away, she brought her ailing mother into the family home. Also during these years, two married daughters with three children returned to the household for a few years. She was a life member of the Oppalunski Lodge OES No. 125 of Strong.
During her nine years as a resident at Edgewood Rehab and Living Center, she enjoyed the various activities and especially playing her usual beano games, which she was even able to do in the nursing home the afternoon before her passing.
She is survived by her four daughters, Elizabeth (Betty) and husband, Fred Whittemore, of Freeman Township, Beverly and husband, Lauris (Audy), of Strong, Arlene and husband, Gerald Webber, of New Vineyard and Joanne and husband, Wesley Moody, of Salem Township; grandchildren, Robert Grover and wife, Robin, of Veazie, Winona (Noni) Badershall of Freeman Township, Patricia Curtiss and husband, Jack, of Wilton, Alton ( Gary) Abbott and wife, Susan, of Freeport, Arthur Abbott of Lewiston, Dena Britton of Strong, Scott Webber and wife, Maria, of New Vineyard, Sharon Webber of New Vineyard and Kristi Leavitt and husband, David, of Wilton; many great and great-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Donald Kenney of New Vineyard; a niece, Barbara Coolidge of Farmington; and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Winona was predeceased by her husband; her parents; and her brothers, Charlie, Rupert and William Kenney.
The family wants to extend a big thank-you to the Edgewood Assisted Living Center staff for nine years and the Nursing Home staff for one week of care, comfort and compassion.
