AUBURN — The Auburn Community Concert Band, under the direction of Milt Simon, will begin its summer series of weekly outdoor evening concerts at Festival Plaza on Wednesday, June 15.

The 7 p.m. performance is the first of 11 scheduled at this downtown Main Street location. The free concerts will continue on Wednesday evenings through Aug. 24. If inclement weather is forecast, performances will be in the ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch at Great Falls Plaza.

The band, made up of 45 volunteer musicians ranging in age from 16 to 85, “gives many individuals a chance to utilize musical talents neglected since their high-school days, and the entire community benefits,” Simon said, noting it is one of the larger community bands in Maine.

This year marks the group’s 30th summer season.

The opening night concert will feature new contemporary songs added to the band’s repertoire during winter rehearsals, including some by singers Phil Collins and Stevie Wonder and groups Journey and Queen.

The band will present a different musical theme and selection of songs every Wednesday. Concertgoers should bring lawn chairs and are advised to arrive at Festival Plaza well before 7 p.m. Free parking is available in the parking garage across from the plaza.
