FARMINGTON — A scheduled court appearance Wednesday for Ryan Ouimet, charged in the shooting death of a friend, will be very brief, Maine Deputy Attorney General William R. Stokes said Friday.

Ouimet, 23, of Colts Neck, N.J., is charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Andrew Holland, 23, of Cape Elizabeth on Tuesday night in an apartment at 117 High St. in Farmington.

Stokes confirmed Friday that Holland died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Holland and Ouimet graduated in May from the University of Maine at Farmington and were working at Olde Post Office Cafe in Mount Vernon.

At the Franklin County Superior Court proceeding at 2 p.m. Wednesday, a justice will only explain the charges Ouimet is facing, Stokes said.

The case will then go to a Franklin County grand jury, which is expected to convene Sept. 14.

Ouimet was released from the Franklin County Detention Center on Wednesday on $10,000 cash bail.

Ouimet was initially charged by police with elevated aggravated assault, because Holland was still alive at the time. The charge was upgraded to manslaughter after Holland died, Stokes said.

The investigation will attempt to determine whether the actions that led to the death were either reckless or negligent, he said.

The handgun involved was owned by Ouimet and is being examined at the state crime lab, Stokes said.
